End of the Line

Portland’s MAX light rail system has 52 miles of track on 4 lines, spanning from Gresham to Hillsboro to Clackamas to the airport. Everett and I thought it would be a fun adventure to try to ride every single one of those miles in the same day.

Everett helped plan the route, which took us on a trip of almost 100 miles after all the back and forth was figured in. We heard the “end of the line” announcement six different times and got to ride in every different model of car, including—much to Everett’s delight—the very first MAX car put in service way back in 1986. Counting a lunch and snack break, we were out for over 8 hours. That’s 8 hours of uninterrupted Everett time, filled with great conversation and insightful observations. Pretty good deal for a $5 ticket.

I swear, you guys are the GREATEST parents! I don’t say this lightly, having observed parents and kids for 34 years of teaching. You two have raised an AMAZING child. I hope his experiences at school won’t stifle his enthusiasm and creativity. I know you’ll check out his classroom teachers carefully!
